“Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Matthew 27: 45-46.

Forsaken and alone the cry of the Saviour rang out through the darkness. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Out of the mouth of our Lord uttered these words in anguish as He tasted the result of sin for every man. For the love of man, Christ experienced death in all its bitterness.

The separation from the Father was more than He could bear. The sense of abandonment, was the last arsenal used by the enemy against Jesus. It was His great last test. He experienced what many of both past and future generations would. That inner battle of the flesh against the feelings of desertion, betrayal and hopelessness enshrouded Christ. All of earth trembled at the scene before it. The Creator Himself, succumbed to death.

“By faith He rested in Him whom it had ever been His joy to obey. And as in submission He committed Himself to God, the sense of the loss of His Father’s favor was withdrawn. By faith, Christ was victor.” Ellen G. White ~ Desire of Ages Page 756.

What Christ experienced on that day is what many martyrs have, in part, faced through the ages. As long as Satan remains, from the days of the first martyr Abel to the close of time for this earth’s history, this battle between good and evil will continue. What is the key that will enable us to stand though the whole world convenes against God’s people? It is faith. Faith in the Word, faith in Christ, faith in the promised resurrection. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.

This month we remember the faithful that have fallen before us. Those that have given all. Let us keep in the forefront of our minds that we are never forsaken, that Christ is with us. He upholds us by the strength of His right hand. No matter what our circumstances, we can overcome by faith in the power of His shed blood.

May God’s favour and protection surround you.
